Cats in My Life
I have three cats in my life, none of them belongs to me.
The first is a lady named Er Mao 二毛, meaning second fur. She is the apple in my room mate's eyes, as she would have it, Er Mao is her daughter and far more important than anyone or anything else in her life. She was adopted from the Humane Society as a kitten and is a little shy of 6-year old. Er Mao is a very quiet and lady like cat – you'd never see her sprawling on the carpet like a drunk man – unlike the other two cats in my life. She is old enough and wise enough to not be distracted by commonly found cat toys. The only thing that can get her going is 1)small insects 2)a laser pointer. And when she is happy, she purrs like a cricket. Interestingly, she bears an uncanny resemblance to her owner – my room mate. I think what people say about the pet looks like its owner rings very true in this case. She is a very good-looking cat, with wide eyes that are naturally eye-linered. Well, my room mate is also very pretty, so, a pretty girl with a pretty cat, I guess there's no mystery in that!
Yes, that's literally his name, named after the sound kids make when they are pretending to shoot each other. He belongs to my room mate's boy friend, and he is currently living as a guest in our apartment. Pew Pew is a ginger cat with four white socks, a white under belly, a white collar and white rings on his tail, all in all, hitting the cutest combinations of a ginger cat. How can I begin to describe him? He is both the cutest and the naughtiest cat I've ever met. His coat is very silky so it's really nice to pet him. While he enjoys petting he also runs away from you as fast as he comes. He is very vocal, talking to himself constantly with a specific "Woo Wahhh". He is crazy about feather toys and has a bit untamed wild spirit in him. He once attacked me for no reason and scratched my back really really badly. That all changes when he is half awake, you could literally do anything to him during that short window and he'd be find with it. He likes to sleep with his head and neck hanging down the side of a table...I can't understand how it could possibly be comfortable, but, what do I know? I'm not a cat after all.
She is another temporary resident of our apartment, belonging to my room mate's younger sister, so in that sense, she is my room mate's niece. Cui Hua is a really really "earthy" name in Chinese, a name you'd expect for a peasant girl in Northeastern part of the country. Her original name was Sushi when she was first adopted, but things quickly went out of control and before we knew it, her name was changed to Cui Hua. And she grows up just like her name! Thick, clueless, having no sense of the fact that she is a lady! She is bigger than the other two so she wins every fight. She sprawls with her belly up and limbs stretched out when she sleeps. When she decides to lie down somewhere, kicking her to ask her to move has no effect. You can push her around with you feet all you want and she'd remain in her relaxed pose like a giant mop and scrape the floor with her long fur. She eats just about anything you give her... and whenever you start eating, she'd look at you in the way that clear suggests you should let her try first.
I am soon to move out and my room mate moving away, so these three cats will soon be out of my life. I would miss them dearly, and dream about their fleshy paws and their rumbling purrs. They said all cat owners are slaves, and that, friends, is a truth well spoken.
