The Return of Spring - Nirvana in Fire 2 Fan Fiction No.2

INTRODUCTION

This piece is what I call a "hole-filling" piece which deals with the "dark period" between NIF1 and NIF2's time setting. It is mostly based on what has been written in NIF1&2 books and fits into characters' age and life experiences.

The characters featured image is attached in the end. I would recommend

NOT TO CHECK IT OUT FIRST

Cause it kind of spoils the story.

And there are further notes attached to the end of the writing. Enjoy!

The Return of Spring (春归)

Early March, Lang Ya mountain was filled with plum blossoms. The red and pink flowers dotted along the green ridges from the foot to the top of the mountain. Soaked in the misty spring fog, the mountain appeared other-worldly looking from afar.

Xiao Tingsheng slowly ascended the stone steps along the back of the mountain, stopping to take a breath every ten steps or so. As the army doctor had suggested, he should have stayed in bed for at least another fortnight before venturing out. But he could’t bare staying idle in the army camp, knowing there was one more important thing that he had to accomplish. Packing up a few simple items and bringing Lieutenant Yuan with him, he left for Lang Ya Hall under the scrutinizing gaze from the doctor and the worrying looks from his fellow soldiers.

The servant boy at the foot of the mountain rang the bell to notify their arrival for people up in Lan Tai pavilion (Note1). Xiao Tingsheng ordered Lieutenant Yuan to go ahead with their luggage, and climbed the mountain slowly by himself. He had to stop so frequently that it took him over three hours to finally nudge his way to the pavilion. Yuan Feng must have gone arranging their accommodation as he was nowhere to be found. Xiao Tingsheng held on to the pillar under the roofed corridor, breathing shallowly as waves of sweats poured down his forehead.

Perhaps he really did overestimate his abilities; it might be more sensible to wait for a couple more days.

Xiao Tingsheng felt dizzy and his vision blurred. Before he lost his balance, however, he was held up by a steady and strong support under his elbow. Turning around, he saw Lin Chen was already next to him without announcing his arrival. He immediately turned to bow to the Master of Lang Ya Hall, but Lin Chen press down his barely raise arm with a firm push. Holding him steadying while dragging him along, Lin Chen guided Xiao Tingsheng into the tea room and sat him down. Without asking for permission, he grabbed Xiao Tingsheng’s left wrist and started feeling for his pulse. After a moment of silence, he curled up his forefinger to signal his guest serving up the other wrist. Xiao Tingsheng knew very well that there was no use to argue with someone like Lin Chen, obediently, he handed over his right hand.

“Not bad, at least you’re unlikely to get down the mountain horizontally.” Finishing up his diagnosis, Lin Chen shrugged his shoulders and stuck his hands back into his long sleeves. “Although I have to say, you really are quite careless, what’s the point to rushing? It’s not like Lang Ya Mountain has legs to run away.”

Since their last meeting, Xiao Tingsheng hadn’t seen Lin Chen for almost ten years. He thought at least the Master would have changed somewhat, yet this man sitting in front of him was exactly as he remembered–as if they had only said goodbye yesterday, and now they were meeting again. Xiao Tingsheng had already sent a message ahead to explain the purpose of his visit. He was feeling uneasy all the way and worried constantly about what might happen once they met. Now they were finally sitting under the same roof, there was no telltale on Lin Chen’s face, which was completely unexpected on Xiao Tingsheng’s end.

As for Lin Chen, Xiao Tingsheng had already grown from a child into an army general stationed on the border. Apart from his face which still maintained the same look, there was almost nothing left on this young man that resembled the plain little boy in memory. Noticing the rather complicated expression on his face, Lin Chen brushed off his sleeves and retracted his out stretched legs.

A sudden silence descended upon the tea room, making Xiao Tingsheng feel even more uneasy. The tea pot on the stove beside him came to his rescue and began to boil, he thankfully shifted his attention to pouring a cup of freshly made tea for Lin Chen and then himself.

“Once you leave, will you go back to the Northern border, or directly to the city of Jin Ling?”

“Jin Ling?”

“It seems I got the news before you did. Your emperor father has ordered your return to the capital, I’m afraid next time we meet, I would have to call you Marquis.”(Note2)

Xiao Tingsheng froze for a moment, then he raised his arms to bow: “To Master, I’m forever just Tingsheng.”

Lin Chen held his gaze on the young man’s face for a few moments and stayed silent, then he suddenly sprang up from his seat cushion.

“I still have some affairs to attend today, and you need a lot of rest. We’ll talk tomorrow when you feel better.” Before Xiao Tingsheng could reply, he left the room like a piece of floating cloud with his incredible qing gong skill. (Note 3) Watching him disappearing into the foggy and lush mountain greeneries, Xiao Tingsheng sat still for a long while before he let out a long sigh. He turned around to look at the misty spring view outside of the window.

Deep in the mountain, time was truly as still as deep water, perhaps there really was no difference between one day and another.

In the evening, Lin Chen sent over a servant to deliver a bowl of steaming medicine. The man also delivered the message instructing Xiao Tingsheng to go to bed straight after taking the remedy. There was not much to do in the mountain anyway, so he gladly complied and went to bed early. This was, however, the first time Lieutenant Yuan Feng (Note4) visited the famous Lang Ya Hall. After the general went to sleep, he ventured out of their quarter to take a stroll. As the night grew darker, the lights in various windows went out one by one, eventually only the master’s quarter remained lit. Yuan Feng saw from downhill that there seemed to be a shadow moving across the pool of light. Unable to withhold his curiosity, he jogged up the staircase towards the source of light.

As he moved closer, he saw that it was Lin Chen practicing his sword in the small stone paved courtyard outside his compound. The courtyard was surrounded by the main building and two side buildings from three sides; the fourth side was left open. There was no roofed corridor in this compound, so the courtyard appeared more like an open platform. The fourth side was built to the edge of a cliff; a waist-high stone railing was constructed along the edge. There was a stone table inside the railing, surrounded by four stone stools. A wine jug was left lying on its side on the stone table. Lin Chen seemed to be fully immersed in his sword dance. He somersaulted onto the railing and moved across the narrow surface as if it was open ground.

The master of Lang Ya Hall was truly an exceptional person! Did he have eyes on his feet? Yuan Feng had only known the hard and blunt fighting style that relied on sheer physical strength in the military camp. How could he have ever seen such a flowing and swift fighting style? Not blinking for a moment in case he missed some great move, he looked on in awe as the sword flashed like blazing snow flakes in Lin Chen’s hand. Dressed in white, the master hopped on the top of the cliff like a dancing crane. In the dark of the night, the trees and rocks all blurred into one murky backdrop, making the flying white dot stand out even more.

Mixed in with the swooshing sound made by the sharp blade, a drunken voice was reciting a poem : “The Mayfly’s wings, so beautiful are its clothes, the sadness in my heart, where would I end up?” (Note5)

Yuan Feng wasn’t a very well read person so he had no idea what Lin Chen was saying. He could only watch in silence as if he was frozen to the ground. He wasn’t sure how long he had stood there until Lin Chen’s voice knocked him out of his trance.

“Have you seen enough? I would have to charge you money if you continued watching any longer!”

Yuan Feng jumped up in surprise. He ran along the stairs and grimaced in embarrassment, holding his arm high he bowed deeply: “Please forgive me Master, my action was inappropriate, I know watching someone practicing in secret is against the rules, please forgive me.”

“Why are you so flustered? Am I really that scary?” Lin Chen flipped the sword around with an elegant wrist turn to pushed it back into its sheath, and threw it down onto the table. Feeling slightly dizzy from the wine he drank, he was in an even better mood for making jokes than usual.

Yuan Feng fought his way up the army ranks, knowing only to live by the rules and following orders. He had no idea how to answer to someone who talked and acted in such a way. Lin Chen couldn’t help laughing secretly in his heart as he watched Yuan Feng’s confused facial expression and body language.

These army men were so stiff and boring!

“Tell me, what do you think of my martial art skills?”

“Master’s movement… it’s quite…unthinkable, I’m not qualified to speculate.”

“Unthinkable?” Lin Chen found the wording rather funny, “Well then, tell me how do I compare to your General Xiao?”

“Um…” Yuan Feng was a little uncertain about what to say, “ Our general is a military man, his martial arts skills are intended for realistic uses, I’m afraid it not compar…” The moment these words left his mouth, Yuan Feng felt it was quite inappropriate to say such things, so he swallowed the last two syllables before he could finish the sentence.

Li Chen broke into a loud laughter, “Well said! Well said! It’s very true! My movement may be quite showy, but if this is a battle field, I’m afraid it would be quite useless! Of course he learned from that uncouth man Xiao Jingyan.”

Hearing him calling out the Emperor’s name directly with “uncouth man” added on top, Yuan Feng almost screamed had he not always been a calm and collected person. He barely managed to hold his shock in yet Lin Chen was totally unaware of his reaction; he seemed to be lost in thoughts as he stared into the dark void of the mountain valley.

“The skill of fleeing is still worth learning though. He was lucky this time, but if something like this happened again, who else would be there to…” Lin Chen’s voice grew fainter and fainter until Yuan Feng couldn’t make out what he was saying. The young Lieutenant stood silent and still beside the Master of Lang Ya Hall as the night sank into total darkness.

The medicine from Lin Chen wasn’t something one should try lightly. Yuan Feng had been in and out of Xiao Tingsheng’s room since early morning, seeing that the general was deep asleep, he dared not wake him up. By the time Xiao Tingsheng woke up, it was already mid-day. Even Xiao Tingsheng was quite surprised. When he was a child living in Ye You Court, he had to rise up early every morning to do his chores. Later when he entered Prince Jing’s manor and then the imperial palace as the Prince became the Crown Prince then eventually the emperor, for over ten years, he had grown used to getting up early to practice martial arts. He had hardly missed a morning workout, not even during the New Year's holidays. He tried to recall the last time he got up this late, but nothing came to mind. To his delight, the Master of Lang Ya Hall was as capable as legend had it; he felt much better and energetic than the day before.

After washing up and taking his lunch, Xiao Tingsheng went to meet Lin Chen on his own. Yuan Feng knew that he didn’t want to be followed, so he stood afar outside the meeting hall Lin Chen had for his guests, watching the general entering the room and sliding the door shut behind him. It was a fine day; the bright spring sunshine warmed up the lush vegetation in the mountain, raising a pleasant floral aroma into the air. The plum blossoms burned vibrant against the blue sky. Yuan Feng stood in the warm sun, squinting his eyes in the bright daylight. Less than twenty days ago, he was trapped in the blazing snow storm and bone cracking cold of Plum Ridge (Note 6); how was it possible that now he was enjoying such a peaceful day in this beautiful and unworldly place?

Plume Ridge in the first lunar month was a terrible place. The storm had been raging on for days. The only way out of the valley was blocked by layers of Da Yu’s Imperial Army. In the faint light of daybreak and the blinding blizzard, the outline of the young man in a blue cape that fluttered wildly in the wind was so deeply imprinted upon Yuan Feng’s mind that twenty days later, he could still recall exactly what he had seen on that freezing cold morning. No one knew for sure how the young man cut through the surrounding enemy troops without alerting anyone. Yuan Feng had been serving the general for almost four years, during which time he had only heard him mentioning the name twice. Even though he had never met this young man before, he was almost certain the first moment he laid his eyes upon him that this remarkably handsome man was “Fei Liu ge ge “ (Note7)  in Xiao Tingsheng's words.

The worst storm in decades was both their hope and their doom. The heavy snowfall and howling wind prevented the reinforcement from entering the mountain, but it also blocked the enemy from advancing. However, everyone knew that once the storm stopped, with a few hundred Da Yu Imperial Army soldiers against their less than seventy men on Da Liang’s side, they were only waiting to be slaughtered.

Xiao Tingsheng had already accepted this fact. When Fei Liu showed up out of the blue, he was really shocked and overjoyed, for a moment, but he soon realized that if it was only the two of them, Fei Liu might be able to get him out of the encirclement without the enemy’s detection. However, if he wanted to get all of his men to safety, it would be an impossible task even for someone as powerful as Fei Liu. Xiao Tingsheng had never considered abandoning his men and fleeing for his own life. No matter how hard Yuan Feng and his other subordinates argued and tried to persuade him, he insisted on staying behind.

“Fight the way out.”

Plus what he said when he first showed up and grabbed Xiao Tingsheng’s arm, which was “Follow me”, Yuan Feng only saw Fei Liu opening his mouth twice. This young man whose gaze was as cold and hard as ice, whose build was slender and tall, was only dressed in a thin layer of clothing in the freezing winter. He seemed to be operating in a world of his own that nobody else could enter.

After sun rise, the storm finally stopped. The valley was covered in a thick layer of fresh and loose snow. It was so quiet that even the sound of pine needles falling can be heard. The sky was washed crystal clear and deep blue; the snow flattened out the rise and fall of the topography and hid all the imperfection under its white blanket. The breathtaking winter scenery had an eerie beauty that made everyone nervous. Xiao Tingsheng shot his last signal into the sky; its loud cracking noise echoed inside the spacious mountain valley.

Seeing the signal, the generals of the Da Yu Imperial Army also knew it was the beginning of a difficult battle. In order to retreat safely, they must capture this enemy general with imperial status before Da Liang’s reinforcement arrived. As for Xiao Tingsheng and his soldiers, they had been trapped in the snow storm for days; no one had extra energy to spare for digging a way out in the deep snow. They stayed still and waited in silence, leaving the task of making a way out to the Da Yu Army.

It was the hardest morning to live through in Yuan Feng’s entire life. There was nothing he could do besides listening to the sound of the Da Yu soldiers’ approaching shovelling noise. Xiao Tingsheng’s men were all resting and storing up their strength, waiting for their opportunity to break through. Yet the anxiety on their faces was too obvious to hide. Unlike everyone else however, Fei Liu showed no fear or concern. He leaned his back on a spruce tree, still as a rock, as if what was about to take place had nothing to do with him at all.

By mid day, the two armies finally clashed. With only his fists and a short dagger, Fei Liu took down whoever was in his way or whoever was attacking Xiao Tingsheng with one strike. His move was so swift and lethal that Yuan Feng would never have believed someone like this could really exist had he not seen everything with his own eyes. He followed closely behind Xiao Tingsheng, benefiting from Fei Liu’s protection as they pushed their way through the oncoming enemy soldiers.

Hot blood spewed and splattered in front Yuan Feng’s eyes, within minutes, no one could tell the whether the blood on their armour and clothes belonged to themselves or someone else. It was hard enough to walk on the snowy ground, let alone riding horses. The road that was dug out of the deep snow was also quite narrow, making it impossible for either side of the battle to spread out their forces. The trail carved into the snow was stained red by blood, colouring its way out slowly from the depth of the valley.

Yuan Feng couldn’t be sure how long it took for them to cut their way through the snow and the enemy force. The slaughter seemed infinitely long, yet at the same time as short as a flash of lightening. In the end, blood had covered his sight so everything he saw took on a tint of red, and his mouth was filled with the salty and metallic taste. Looking back, he still couldn’t quite sort out the order of events that took place; how the reinforcement converged with them, how he managed to get behind the protection of his army buddies,  everything seemed to have been scrambled up in his memory.

Eventually, only thirteen men managed to fought their way out, among whom Yuan Feng sustained the lightest injuries. He had only a couple of cuts on his forearms and shoulders, by the third day afterwards he was able to walk around without much difficulty. He thought there was no other words beside “fate favoured” to describe his pure and dumb luck. Although Xiao Tingsheng had Fei Liu by his side all the way, he still got stabbed quite badly by a spear, which left him unconscious in bed for five days. As for the rest of the survivors, five of them were still bed ridden when they set out for Lang Ya Hall.

As for Fei Liu, by the time he dragged Xiao Tingsheng behind the shield of their reinforcement army, the general was already unconscious. The soldiers rushed to help their commander, no one paid any attention to the quiet young man. They only turned to look when they heard a loud thud in the snow. Fei Liu was on his knees. Nobody knew him apart from the soldiers who fought their way out with him. His face was covered in clotted and frozen blood which made him almost unrecognizable. His blue clothes had turned black with blood drenched through the fabric. The dagger was still grasped tightly in his hand, blood was dripping slowly off the tip of the blade into the snow. The trail of his coming steps wound through the snow like a blood red snake, disappearing into the wall of the formation of soldiers.

Yuan Feng shuddered when he recalled the picture in his mind; he realized he had wandered off in his memory for quite a while. Though it was a lovely spring day and he was standing in the warm sun, he still felt a rush of freezing cold climbing up his spine, spreading to his finger tips in moments. He turned to look at Lin Chen’s reception hall: the door was still tight shut, and he wondered how far the general and the master’s conversation had gone.

“Master hardly wrote to me all these years, I thought you didn’t want to deal with anything or anyone concerning Jin Ling, then how come Fei Liu ge ge…?’

The tea in their cups was no longer steaming; the atmosphere in the room was so heavy that one could almost feel the weight pressing down on their shoulders.

“These years spent at Lang Ya Hall, he never cared for any other news, apart from one thing, which he constantly reminded me to inform him no matter what.”

“What was that?”

“Tingsheng Didi.”(Note 8)

Xiao Tingsheng’s vision blurred and he quickly lowered his eyes, afraid of looking straight at Lin Chen. Lin Chen turned his gaze to the low table in front of the window: a clay vase with a freshly picked plum branch stood still on top, the pink petals blossomed with a refreshing scent. They sat face to face in silence. Xiao Tingsheng waited for a long time before he mastered the courage to continue speaking.

“Sir, you don’t blame me?”

“Why would I?”

“Because if I didn’t insist…” Xiao Tingsheng lowered his head and sobbed; the sound of the tear drops breaking on his lap was loud and clear.

Lin Chen let out a long sigh.

“Even though you are not your emperor father’s biological son, your stubborn and dull brain is somehow an exact replica of his.”

Xiao Tingsheng raised his head in confusion, and he saw that Lin Chen’s expression took on a softer but more serious look.

“You did what you thought you should do, he did what he thought he should do, how was that different from the choice your mentor (Note 9) made all those years ago? If I must blame someone, do I have to blame each and every one of you?”

Lin Chen spread out his sleeves and straightened his back, not remembering ever talking to someone in such a serious and formal manner. It was at this moment, looking at the weeping young man, that he first realized clearly he was no longer the Lin Chen who used to travel the world with a carefree attitude and an unburdened heart.

“The greatest fortune anyone could have in this world is to live their life following their true intent. Fei Liu might appear to be unlucky to others, being afflicted in his mind. But he had lived his life without the need to pretend or to compromise. Whatever he did, he did them with his true intent, isn’t that much more fortunate than most of those ignorant people? As for his ending, whether it’s here or there, now or some other time, does it really matter?”

Xiao Tingsheng had broken into an unstoppable cry; it took him a long time to finally calm down and slowly raise his hands to bow to Lin Chen.

“I’m grateful for Master’s guidance.”

Lin Chen sent out his first message to Jin Ling city in many years on that night, directly addressed to Xiao Jingyan, informing him that his precious adopted son would need to recuperate on the mountains for quite some time before he could set out for the capital. In the days that followed, he personally took care of Xiao Tingsheng’s health and prescribed medicines for him. He also took him on an in-depth tour around Lang Ya Hall, showing him many secret and intricate places that no one outside had ever seen. Xiao Tingsheng had the feeling that if he stayed any longer, Lin Chen would have turned him into his elected disciple. Maybe it was due to the fact that now they shared a common pain of Mei Changsu and Fei Liu, it somehow brought them closer. Lin Chen didn’t know much about Xiao Tingsheng as a person previously, but the days they spent together made him realize this young man was not as boring or dull as he initially appeared to be, and Lin Chen was quite happy to have made a friendship between generations.

By early April, Xiao Tingsheng had recovered fully under Lin Chen’s care, even the small problems he had accumulated over the years fighting on the cold north had been altogether taken care of. On the day he bid farewell to the Master of Lang Ya Hall,  Lin Chen even said to send his regard to Xiao Jingyan, which surprised both men as neither of them had expected something so diplomatic could come out of Lin Chen’s mouth. After Xiao Tingsheng’s departure, Lang Ya Hall returned to its daily routine. It took Lin Chen quite a few days to finally settle back to the life where no guest would come to bother him on a daily basis.

It was the best time of year; spring was everywhere in Lang Ya Mountain. Lin Chen ordered a sapling pagoda tree (Note 10) to be brought up to his quarter. Since he buried Mei Changsu at Plum Ridge ten years ago, he had been fearing there might come a day when he had to go bury Fei Liu as well (Note 11). He was, after all,  a mortal being, however legendary his medical skills were, he couldn’t raise the dead. As hard as he tried, he could never be as detached as he always pretended to be. Perhaps the heavens had finally decided to treat him kindly for once, sparing him the pain of having to send off another person who was dear to him. Just as what he did when he planted the first pagoda tree in his courtyard, burying a set of Mei Changsu’s clothes under its root, this time, he buried Fei Liu’s hair band Xiao Tingsheng brought back from the battle field.

Laying down the soil, watering and arranging the stones around the tree pit, it took him almost an hour to finally plant the tree properly. Lin Chen dusted the soil off his hands and crossed his arms. He looked from left to right to appreciate the two small trees on both sides of his stone table.

“Little Fei Liu, are you happy with my arrangement?” Tears ran down his face before he could finish the sentence.

NOTES

1. Lan Tai (兰台)is written in NIF2 books as a pavilion built on the top of the back side of Lang Ya Mountain, designed to receive special guests of Lin Chen's.

2. In NIF2's books, it was stated that Xiao Tingsheng was granted the title Marquis (侯) when he was 23, then the title Wang (王) at 27.

3. Qing Gong (轻功) is a form of martial arts in the Kong Fu novel genre that means abilities to lighten one's steps and body and be swift and jump to great heights.

4. Lieutenant Yuan's full name was never mentioned so I made it up as Yuan Feng.

5.“蜉蝣之羽,衣裳楚楚。心之忧矣,於我归处。" This is a line from a poem 蜉蝣 from the oldest poems collection in China, 诗经。The poet is talking about the short but beautiful life of a mayfly, and feeling sad about the fact that he doesn't know where he would end up. I thought it's very fitting for Lin Chen to be reciting it given what he was going through.

6. Plum Ridge 梅岭,is a place on the northern border where the Chi Yan Army perished in the first NIF. It is also the place where Mei Changsu was buried and later Tingsheng was buried.

7. Ge Ge 哥哥 in Chinese means older brother, you can use it to call a male person who is the same generation as you but older.

8. Di Di 弟弟 is used for younger brother.

9. Mei Changsu

10. Pagoda tree in Chinese is 槐树,the character 槐 is pronounced the same as the character 怀,which means missing someone or in memory of some one. So it's Lin Chen's way of remembering Mei Changsu and Fei Liu.

11. In the first NIF book it was mentioned that Fei Liu was rescued by Lin Chen and Mei Changsu when they were traveling in Japan. Fei Liu was then a boy kidnapped by an assassin's league to be trained as a killer. His brain was affected by the poison those people fed him to control him. Even though later he was rescued, because of the particular martial arts he practiced and the poison he ingested, it is suggested that he was unlikely to live a very long life.

CHARACTERS FEATURED

READ ME BEFORE YOU START

So...here it is. My grand NIF2 Fan Fiction work. So far I've written about 30,000 English words worth of content. Yes, it's that crazy! They are all written in Chinese originally, and I'm not sure if I could ever translate all of it as it is really really time consuming. But let's just begin and we'll see what happens down the line.

This is not a word by word translation as the Chinese version is written in a particular style that doesn't necessarily fully convert to modern English, but it's 95% the same thing.

And it reads really funny to me when I try to compare the two versions in my head. Languages are weird things when you look at them side by side.

This piece is not the first one I wrote for NIF2, but I do think it's a good one to start with. The story takes place about 3 months after the ending of the drama.

And if you are curious to find out what the gift Lin Chen gave Pingjing for his wedding, image google this Chinese word — 压箱底, and prepare to be really shocked!

THE WEDDING

Three months later.

Lang Ya Hall hosted its first ever wedding.

Since Xiao Pingjing and Lin Xi arrived two months ago, everyone seemed to have suddenly become much busier. Lang Ya Hall was located deep in the mountains, all things needed to be brought in from the outside. Before their arrival, there was only half a roll of red fabric left, and part of that was made into Xiao Ce's New Year’s clothes. In order to host a wedding, much was to be arranged.

Xiao Pinging and Lin Xi stressed over and over that they didn’t care for extravagance; Lin Chen also happened to be the least rule-abiding person in the world. Naturally, rituals and new purchases were reduced to minimum, still, it was enough to create hustle and bustle for over a month. Lin Xi had no real family of her own; the message delivered from Ji Feng Hall’s Lang Zhou branch informed them that Old Master Li wouldn’t be able to reach Lang Ya Mountain until very close to the wedding date. Since the couple wouldn’t really settle down on the mountain, there was no need to transport dowry up the mountain, when later they would have to carry everything back down again. After all, as the Mistress of Ji Feng Hall, technically all of its branches could be considered as Lin Xi’s dowry, and it became rather unrealistic to calculate how much was really there. Xiao Pingjing had never worried about money  matters apart from working out military logistics; Meng Qianxue was also quite clueless about account books since the House of Changlin always had its butler taking care of such matters. Eventually, no one even spared a thought for this matter.

Initially, Lin Xi gallantly volunteered to sew her own wedding garment. Their wedding had already involved every student and employee of Lin Chen’s, she therefore felt obliged to contribute something on her own. She had traveled with Old Master Li to work as doctors all her life; sewing was nothing new to her, being it on a piece of cloth or a real person. Yet when it came to turning a piece of fabric into a dress, she had never actually gone through the whole procedure for even once. After three days of intense needle work, she still hadn’t finished the skirt while her back was aching and her sight blurry. Meng Qianxue came to her aid, but she was no better at such skills. A few days later, they barely finished a jacket and a skirt. Although neither had any decorative touches, the future sisters-in-laws already shuddered at the sound of “clothes”. Xiao Pingjing watched from aside with interest, laughing secretly at their failed effort. When he presented their work of art to Lin Jiu for his assistance, Lin Jiu couldn’t hide his contempt after one quick glance.

“Well, let me figure something out.” Lin Jiu couldn’t help but shook his head.

Within a fortnight, Lin Xi’s wedding gown was ready: refined and tasteful. Lang Ya Hall was a place with crouching tiger and hidden dragon, being on top of whatever was going on in the world was not its only specialty. The future sister-in-laws didn’t care if the clothes was made or bought. They thanked heaven and earth to have another essential item checked off the long list.

Ten days before the set wedding date, Xun Feizhan and Du Zhong arrived at Lang Ya Hall. On the very night they arrived, Pingjing grabbed Feizhan for a sword fight and drank with him well into the night. In the days that followed, Ce’er was stuck on Feizhan. Wherever he went, the child followed. Feizhan rarely had an opportunity to leave the city of Jin Ling, escaping from all the troubles and memories of the past year. He was more than happy to spend his days playing with Ce’er, teaching him martial art, reading and tree climbing.

Three days before the wedding, Old Master Li finally arrived, looking rather weary from the long travel. He rested for a night then went straight to discuss the wedding arrangement with Meng Qianxue. They spent a whole day finalizing every detail. After dinner, he pulled Lin Xi aside and handed her a rosewood box. Lin Xi opened the box and took a peak, it was a set of exquisite jewelry: a pair of engraved gold hair pins with rubies mounted on top,  two gold side combs with etched cloud patterns, a pair of ruby and pearl ear rings. Judging from the precious gemstones and the refined metal work, these must have cost a great deal.

“Master, this is way too expensive.”

“Xi’er, I know you don’t care for jewelries or precious things, but getting married is an important occasion. Although the marriage between you and him is nothing like what most people have, you’re still the daughter of Ji Feng Hall, and your must marry with splendour.”

Lin Xi had lived without protection or care from her parents since childhood; she had grown quite used to relying on herself for everything. Somehow, hearing those words moved something buried deep inside her. A lump came up in her throat and she quickly thanked him before her tears fell.

On the day of the wedding, Lin Xi woke up before daybreak and couldn’t fall back to sleep. Giving up on the effort, she got up and dressed. When she walked out of the room, the bright moon was still shinning in the sky. The morning breeze in the mountains felt cool and fresh, blowing away her drowsiness. She couldn’t help thinking how well Xiao Pingjing had rested for the night. What she couldn’t have known was that he didn’t even manage to sleep for one moment. Though he went to bed early and counted the wooden beams over his head back and forth, he was still wide awake after almost an hour. He then went into the courtyard to practice his sword, hoping to tire himself out so that he would get sleepy, but he got even more energized after the practice. He didn’t dare resolve to alcohol in case he screwed up the big day. After going through all his options, he decided reading in Lang Ya Hall’s giant library would be a good idea. He flipped through book after book, not a single word would stick in his mind. The flame of the oil lamp danced and glittered in front of his eyes, making him feel even more unsettled. Time dragged inch by inch until the eastern horizon brightened with a shade of pink. He hopped onto the roof of the library, witnessing the sunrise that ended this long and sleepless night.

Apart from the helpers in the kitchen, everyone at Lang Ya Hall put down their work on this day; even the pigeons got the day off. Compared to the wedding hosts Meng Qianxue and Old Master Li, the esteemed guests Lin Chen, Xun Feizhan and Du Zhong, and all the students at Lang Ya Hall, Xiao Pingjing and Lin Xi had a much tougher day. The groom didn’t sleep for a whole night, by evening, his head was swimming and his eyelids were fighting to stay open. The bride was dressed in layers of heavy gowns and carrying a head full of gold and gemstones, barely ate or drank anything through the day. After the nuptial drinking ceremony, the guests finally left, leaving the two alone in their bridal room.  The newly weds both slumped aside, together they let out a long sigh.

The first thing Lin Xi did was taking off her heavy ceremonial gowns, picking those clinking jewelries out of her hair piece by piece, and gulping down three cups of water. Xiao Pingjing scanned the room draped with red silk and lit by red candles, and rested his eyes on the pile of gifts. He suddenly remembered earlier that day Lin Chen handed him a small box. The gifts from other guests can wait till tomorrow, but Xiao Pingjing was too curious to see what Lin Chen had offered. He got up and started searching through the pile, Old General Wei, Dong Qing, Yue Yinchuan, Xun Feizhan, the names popped up one by one, until he finally found what he was looking for. The box from Lin Chen didn’t even have a mark! Had he not paid special attention when he received it from Lin Chen’s hands, he might not be able to even locate it. The box was made of cedar, small and quite plain looking. He opened the box, and another brocade box was sitting inside. He wondered what the Old Master of Lang Ya Hall was so covert about and lifted the lid.

A quint peach shaped china piece wrapped by layers of silk popped into view. He froze for a while, his sleepy brain was too tired to make a quick response. By the time he realized what was in his hand, Lin Xi had already sneaked up on him. He shuddered in surprise, almost dropping it to the ground. Struggling to maintain his calm appearance, he quietly set the box back down on the table. His heart was pounding like a loud drum, and the drowsiness he was feeling moments ago had completely evaporated. Li Xi knotted her brows, looking at him with questioning eyes. To divert her attention, he quickly grabbed her shoulders.

“You must be tired after a day of hustle, you should get some rest.” He tried to push her further away from the table. Lin Xi followed his guide for a few steps, then abruptly she ducked down. Slipping out of his hands, she turned around to reach for the box. Fortunately for him, Xiao Pingjing was the one with longer arms. He managed to snatch the box off the table before she could lay her hand on it. Raising it high above his head, he swung his arm to keep it out of her reach.

“It’s just a joke from the Old Master, there’s nothing to see!”

“If it’s a gift from the Old Master, why couldn’t I take a look?” Lin Xin was not ready to give up. When it came to fighting, Xiao Pinging was way better at that than Lin Xin. If it really was his intention to not let her get the box, she wouldn’t even have a chance. That was also his intention, initially. However, after a few rounds, he found it was actually quite fun playing dodge and grab, so he started to lead her, taking the box out of her hands moments before she thought she had nailed it. Perhaps it was due to the wine that she drank on an empty stomach, Lin Xi felt her head started to buzz, as Xiao Pingjing ran around in the room like a naughty child, she was reminded of the time when they first met, how he clang to her at every chance available, coming up with all kinds of excuses just to have a conversation with her. The playful child inside her became wide-awake, and she began to chase after him with all her might.

What they ended up with was a room turned up side down:  the candle holders were tipped over everywhere and the table cloth was gahtered on the floor . Lin Xin was still dressed in her long skirt, she stepped on the fabric and stumbled over. Xiao Pingjing reached out just in time to catch her, and they both fell down hard on the floor.

“I give up,  whatever that is!” Lin Xi felt tired and she finally had enough playing around. Landing a loud slap on his chest, she sat up and began to arrange her messy hair and clothes. Xiao Pinging pushed himself up along the edge of the platform bed, watching her with disbelief.

“You are not going to look?”

“I don’t have to, I already know.” Lin Xi patted on her skirt a few times, and sat down on the edge of the bed. Seeing the surprised look on his face, she fought to keep her mouth from curling up. Xiao Pingjing didn’t believe her, and they stared at each other for a while. Somehow a speedy exchange of thoughts took place between them without either uttering a word. He was after all a quick-minded person, and immediately he understood she was telling the truth. Lin Xi had been learning medicine all her life, even Ce’er was born with her help, how could she not have guessed? Under normal circumstances this item would be included in the bride’s dowry, but Lin Chen must have realized that Lin Xi had no need for such things; it was definitely intended for him…

“The older he gets, the more licentious he is!” Xiao Pingjing turned away from Lin Xi to hide his flushed face and chucked the box to the side. He planned to turn around after his face cooled down somewhat, but Lin Xi quietly moved up to him. When he turned around, her face was only inches aways. They both froze when their eyes met. Xiao Pingjing swallowed involuntarily, feeling a rush of blood climbing up his neck, setting his face on fire. Lin Xi’s eyes glistened and her cheeks were also glowing pink. She moved even closer, her breath tinted with the scent of wine.

“What do you think, from now on, should I call you Pingjing, husband or prince?”

————— This is a dividing line of modesty—————

Xun Feizhan and Du Zhong sat under the roofed corridor, chatting while drinking warmed wine. Occasionally, Xun Feizhan would glance at the light seeping out of the bridal room down the hill. It stood out even more now that every other room in Lang Ya Hall was dark.

“Time truly stands still in the mountains. It’s not such a bad idea to stay here and live like a god.” Xun Feizhan sighed.

“Our young mistress has great ambitions, I’m afraid she would head out in a few days.” Du Zhong took a sip of his wine and said calmly.

“What about Pingjing then?”

“Obviously he would have to accompany her.” Du Zhong was a little drunk now, he laughed with great confidence : “It’s only a matter of time before Prince Changlin becomes a student of medicine.”

A breeze blew across the mountain,  the beady lights under the corridor roof quivered. Du Zhong poked at the coal in the small stove and began telling what he had witnessed since the days in Jin Ling. When he reached the highlights of Xiao Pingjing and Lin Xi’s story, he gloated with so much enjoyment it completely took Xun Feizhan by surprise. He didn’t expect this doctor who had saved his life, who had always appeared so appropriate and poised, was actually a gifted story teller and gossip king. The amount of detail Du Zhong revealed was way more elaborate than what Xun Feizhan had gathered from Meng Qianxue.

It was close to mid-night, all was quiet, only Du Zhong’s chatter was echoing in the empty mountain valley.

10 Best Korean Dramas (part 2) - AvenueX's Personal List

So the list continues.

I'm about to dump 3 Lee Jong Suk dramas in a row, and I promise it is not because I'm his fan girl. I don't particularly "fan" any Korean actors/actress, these three just happen to be 3 REALLY good dramas.

I Hear Your Voice 너의 목소리가 들려 2013

Ihyv.jpg

This drama is INTENSE.

If you are particularly sensitive to parent-child relationship/love you are going to have a painful and emotional journey with this drama. Because for both lead roles, that's the biggest pain/arc they have to deal with in this entire story, and it gets really really really sad and excruciating to watch. But OMG it makes this drama so good! Lee Jong Suk plays a high schooler who since his childhood has developed a telepathic ability to hear others' thought due to the traumatic experience of witnessing his father's murder. Lee Bo Young plays a mediocre prosecutor who put his father's murderer in jail when she was still a teenager because she was brave enough to speak out as a witness. Yet years later, when the boy grows up to be an almost adult and the girl now close to her 30s, the murderer goes free and SHIT starts to happen. The heart and core of this drama is about the love between family, the price of doing the right thing and the deep bond people form through harsh experiences. Though it is a very much a big-sis-little-bro drama as well, it feels super natural, super genuine and not forced at all. You really do feel they are totally meant for each other and their relationship is just BEAUTIFUL. The actor who plays the bad guy and the actress who plays our female lead's mom are both AMAZING! This is a drama that will flush your system with crazy hormones. Watch and you'll FEEL what I mean.

Pinocchio 피노키오 2014-2015

pino.jpg

This drama was BIG back when it aired. We have Lee Jong Suk and Park Shin Hye paired up so it practically guaranteed a huge viewership. Lee Jong Suk plays a hidden genius boy whose firefighter father died saving others but was wrongfully accused and blamed for people's death due to a Pinocchio witness' testimony. He then gets adopted by Park Shin Hye's character's grandfather and grows up with her(who is also a Pinocchio so she can't lie) under the same roof as legally uncle and niece. But her mother, a famous journalist was instrumental in the destruction of his father's reputation and his family, as they both begin to pursue the journalist career, the past starts to mess with their professional and private relationships. In a way, this drama's premise is very similar to I hear Your Voice, where the lead roles have painful childhood history regarding their parents. But it is lighter than IHYV overall and certainly has more sweet and funny moments. The integrity of journalism and the pursuit of truth are at the core of the story, something very popular in k-drama land (Healer is about the same thing). This drama is well-done in all aspects and again, I can't really find any obvious flaws with the story telling (although getting a staple gun shot in your arm that causes no profound bleeding yet you still faint is a bit over the top ... watch and you'll know what I mean). If you're the fan of either lead or just interested in this type of plot, be sure to check this drama out and I don't see how you can get disappointed.

W 2016

w.jpg

In contemporary web language Chinese, we have a word 脑洞 (Nao Dong) which translates to “brain hole". It means something that is bit insane and overly imaginative. So the brain hole of this drama is one of the largest I've seen in recent years. Lee Jong Suk plays a made-up manga character who is a successful large business owner. He hosts a crime solving TV show W, because his whole family was murdered in cold blood and he wants to find our who did it and why. A side note, his characters just have the hardest childhood in human history (Dr. Stranger, I Hear Your Voice, Pinocchio, W...really, can his character ever have a happy normal childhood?)

Our female lead played by Han Hyo Joo is a young doctor whose famous manga artist father created Lee Jong Suk's character. With some disturbing agenda (not going to spoil it here), the father tries to kill his creation in the manga, and the daughter gets pulled into the manga world and saves him, thus craziness begins. This drama's first 2/3 is really insanely cool and imaginative, although it did get a bit too much and too difficult to sort out later, I'd forgive that just for the daring spirit of the writer and the crew to try making something this "out there". Again, beautiful production in every way, I noticed since 2016 all k-dramas seem to have updated their hardware in some way that the cinematography looks so much better than before (W, Goblin, The Legend of the Blue Sea). And the manga part of this drama is so COOL! I want to buy all those books and Lee Joing Suk does look like someone who can walk out of a drawing. If you love this type of crazy 脑洞 story, you HAVE TO watch this k-drama! There really isn't anything else like it out there.

Singal 시그널 2016

signal.jpg

If you're not particularly interested in any actor/actress per se and just want to watch a page-turner story on screen. This is the drama to go for. The Leading female and male police detectives reside in present time, and through a magical walkie-talkie that can contact the past, they join force with a detective in the past to solve crimes. That's the premise, and you'll have to watch the drama yourself to see what happens, I'm not going to spoil it for your here. It is relatively lesser known because it doesn't have those BIG HOT names, but the story is GOOOOOD and everyone who has watched it is raving about it. It's only 16 episodes, I'm sure you can finish it like...in a day (without sleeping or eating or living your life).

Ok, before I put my last one out, I need to say that there are MANY MORE great K-dramas out there, and I have to put a number cap on this list or it will continue to expand indefinitely. There are some super popular ones that didn't get on this list because like I said, it's a personal list. Dramas such as Descendants of the Sun or Goblin were HUGE when they aired, yet for whatever reason I sense no particular connections to them. Either the stories didn't work for me or the chemistry didn't click, so if you're a lover of those dramas, please don't feel left out, and love what you love how you want to love it.

Jewel in Palace 대장금 2003-2004

dcj.jpg

Ok, ok, I'm eating my shoes here. I said I'll leave out the "last generation" dramas, but I just can't help it. As you can see, this is an OLD drama, it doesn't even have a large enough picture online for me to use here, and it was filmed in 4:3 ration FYI, which says plenty about its time. There's no HD version out there, the cinematography has nothing "cool" or "inventive". The sets are very standard and scenes move between a few set places; costumes are normal without elaborate embellishment. But despite all this, this THE K-drama that made K-drama known to other countries outside Korea and initiated an era that marks the beginning of the K-drama's conquest globally. The story is slow but well written, the leading roles are beautifully portrayed. Lee Young Ae is a real life vampire lady cause she never ages and her performance always gets to your heart! If you haven't heard about this one (which I doubt), it's about a palace maid of the Chongson period who through her own effort becomes a prominent chef/doctor in court. This kind of sums it up but there's so much more going on in this drama. It is very long and like I said old so it's less visually appealing than the newer dramas, so if you don't have the stamina to watch all of it, I'd completely undertand. But it deserve a special place in the history of K-dramas, and I believe in many years from now, it will still be on those lists of mile stone works in K-drama history.

That's the end of the list of my FAV K-dramas as of Oct 2017. It would probably grow and change as long as NK doesn't decide to suddenly wipe out humanity and the earth stays on its obit and unkissed by other celestial bodies. So happy drama watching and let me know what you think about anything and everything about K-dramas.

10 Best Korean Dramas (part 1) - AvenueX's Personal List

This is the first half of my personal list of my FAV k-dramas that is neither listed in any particular order nor by any means comprehensive or fair. I will put the part 2 up as soon as I can, this blog is taking far more time than I expected to finish. So let's get right on with it! Click on the names to watchable sites if there are any.

SIDE NOTE: There are many great "older" dramas that really belongs to the "last generation“ of k-dramas, for ease of actually finding good quality versions to watch+ being subbed, I have left these ones out of this list.

ANOTHER SIDE NOTE: Viki.com just made many dramas unavailable to "standard pass" holders so you have to pay more to upgrade to access older dramas. Shame on you! You are making people who have followed your site for a long time feel like they are nothing unless they have money to spare!

MY LOVE FROM THE STAR 별에서 온 그대 2013-2014

mlfts.jpg

I put this one up first because it's the first one that would come to my mind when I think about Korean dramas. The success it managed to achieve is "in my opinion" still not surpassed by anything else ever since (I know the crazy success of Descendants of the Sun but I don't consider DOS as that great of a drama storywise). This K-drama was HUGE globally when it aired, causing YSL no. 52 lipsticks to run out of stock for months everywhere because Jun Ji Hyun wore it in the drama. It made Kim Soo Hyun a household name in China and for a year or two he is EVERYWHERE in ads (from bakery to skincare). The story is simple enough, 400 year old stuck on earth alien man meets super actress woman who conveniently moves in next door and is also his student at the university. But that is just the set-up of the story, things go crazy from here. So why is this drama so captivating? Well, I would first give all this success to the brilliant story telling of this drama that has a great mix of comedy, drama, mystery/thriller that never lags. Every episode ends on a powerful note that automatically sends the viewers to watch the next. Then there was the acting that is just done perfectly to a T. Jun Ji Hyun is the queen of acting in Korea, and Kim Soo Hyun is a natural. Their chemistry is so good no matter how unrealistic the story is, you BELIEVE it to be real. And did I mention it is ridiculously funny? Hahahahahaha, I laughed to tears so many times watching this drama, and the OST is insanely amazing! So if you for some reason NEVER WATCHED A KOREAN DRAMA, go watch this one first!

THE KING 2 HEARTS 더킹 투하츠 2012

tk2h.jpg

Some people might be surprised by this one because it is relatively lesser known and slightly far back in time. I don't even remember how I came across this one but I was so hooked and touched by this drama it kind of earned a special place in my heart. This drama can be classified as one of those hate-to-love classic dramas that has the two leads absolutely despise each other in the beginning and gradually through their joined experiences fall deeply for each another. The fictional premise is that South Korea is a constitutional monarchy while North is well... as what North is in reality. Lee Seung Gi plays the younger brother to the current King of SK who was set to marry a NK solider played by Ha Ji Won, daughter of a NK high official for political alliance. The story is very well-paced, exciting but not without super fun or tender moments, and both leads are phenomenal in their portrayal of their characters. In many ways I would say this is one of the best acted k-dramas of all times. The only thing I'm not sure about is their portrayal of NK because frankly speaking, SK people have very little idea about how things actually are in NK, especially when it comes to the "mentality" part. But apart from this the drama is filled with emotional highs and delicious acting + plot twists. Both leading characters complete a great character arc which is not always seen in a drama.  And the second couple's arc (between the princess and her body guard soldier) is also heart-breakingly beautiful to watch. If you don't fall in love with them at the end of the drama you can make me to eat shoes which I would politely refuse unless they are made of chocolate.

HEALER 힐러 2014-2015

healer.jpg

It is with great reasons that this drama has a 9.8 rating on Viki.com. Every aspect is so well executed that I really can't complain about anything regarding this drama. This drama deals with corruptions in politics, the integrity of journalism and social justice, all of which are very popular topics in the K-drama world. Ji Chang Wook plays a gun-for-hire type of guy who is so good at physical combat he could probably take down Li Min Ho's character in City Hunter. Park Min Young plays inspired journalist who is fierce and courageous at pursuing truth even though she is tiny and has no special powers. Both leads have very troubled past/childhood that would later play a very important part in the plot line. This drama has plenty of actions, suspensions, emotional upheaval and funny moments. Plus both leads are so pretty to look at and their styling in this drama is really lovely to watch, you just get pure drama satisfaction watching Healer. It will be 20 hours well spent in your life and beware of the very memorable theme music that will be stuck in your head long after you've finished watching it. Highly recommended!

KILL ME, HEAL ME 킬미, 힐미 2015

kmhm.jpg

Admittedly I'm still watching this drama as I wrote this blog. I know it's a bit late catching up, but back when it aired I was still in the Healer mood I couldn't watch anything else. This is another highly rated k-drama by almost everyone and every site I have come across, so I put my good faith in the wisdom of the public and went into watching it. The male lead role played by Ji Sung has D.I.D due to traumas in his life. He has seven personalities who can take over his body and time, and as an heir to a giant enterprise, just imagine the amount of trouble this can give him (a nod to Split here, James McAvoy wasn't the first one who had to play 7 people in a show). The female lead played by Hwang Jung Eum is a psychiatric doctor who through a series of events became entangled with him...and his problem. While neither leads are the biggest k-drama acting names out there, this drama's story is the main reason for its huge success. Watching those vastly different characters with one person's face and body is fun enough and good enough as a reason to pick up this drama. The actors do a brilliant job making their characters convincing and interesting. The premise of the story has so much potential to go horribly wrong, yet to our good fortune it didn't go down that route. If you're interested in a multiple personality story, this is your go-to k-drama.

QUEEN IN HYUN'S MAN 인현왕후의 남자 2012

qihm1.jpg

This drama shows you what happens when real life chemistry translates to screen, because the lead actor and actress were for a time, a real couple off screen. And...well, you can practically taste the electric exchanges that are constantly sparking off between them. Our leading female character played by Yoo In Na is a small actress who is trying to make her name in the business. She landed a role as Queen In Hyun in a historical drama, and who is better to help her acting the right part than a man who is from that period? The leading male character played by Ji Hyun Woo is a Chongson scholar who escaped an assassination attempt through a magical talisman and landed in contemporary Seoul. Obviously they meet and they fall for each other, while dealing with all the drama with voluntary or involuntary time travel. This drama was aired in 2012, so quite a bit time ago, and production techniques and qualities have improved since then, but the acting and story telling of this drama is so strong it still remains one of the best romantic dramas from the k-drama land. Watch this one you will laugh and cry with the characters and you will taste what true love really is like.

Part II coming soon...

Gentlemen Plants of China

I know, Gentlemen and Plants? Why are they even related? Well, as funny as it sounds, this is not a unique cultural phenomena of China. In the west, rose represents love, in China, waterlily/lotus represents a person with great integrity. We humans are always trying to project our values onto things in our surroundings.

There are four plants in China that always show up as a package: they represent the ideal morals and values a true gentlemen should possess. They are in daily speeches, writings, paintings and many other things. They are 梅 (mei)、兰(lan)、竹(zhu)、菊(ju); plum, orchid, bamboo and chrysanthemum.

Plum flower early spring

PLUM

Plum, or rather, plum trees' flowers, are the first one we encounter in this pack of four plants. Plum flowers are traditionally treated as an embodiment of a person's strength and perseverance. Plum flowers blossom in late winter early spring, often while snow is still falling. The flowers bloom despite the harsh environmental conditions, thus are often used as a metaphor for someone's ability and integrity to face hardship with courage. There's no shortage of the representations of plum flowers on China's TV screen.

ORCHID

The interesting thing about orchid is that the most valuable and rare flowers grow in remote mountains. This quality of orchid is a great natural representation of a very commonly praised and admired quality of a scholar...being a recluse and stay away from the messy politics of the establishment. Besides, orchid has lovely scents, and it often takes years for a rare plant to bloom, which can also be interpreted as a scholar's patience and steadfast character. You see this flower in many Chinese and Korean dramas, often as a pet plant of highly educated people. The character 兰,is a very common given name for girls in ancient China. It is still being used today as a girl's name although much less so.

BAMBOO

Bamboo is unique among the four gentlemen plants. While the others are appreciated for their flowers (and their embodied characters), bamboo is loved because of its strong yet flexible body. Bamboos are straight, representing the straight characters of a gentleman; bamboos are hollow in the middle, representing tolerance and generosity. The plant can stay dormant for years before suddenly grow out of the soil and turn into a proper tree in days, representing patience and capability. Of course, being extremely strong yet flexible is also a great quality that you can easily relate to human characters. Bamboo is often used to represent men, although it's not uncommon to use for women.

CHRYSANTHEMUM

Chrysanthemum usually blooms in autumn, after all the other flowers have withered. This particular character become literary scholar's favourite, as it represents the quality similar to orchid – being aways from the hustle and bustle and competition. Chinese scholars have this obsession with being singled out, being considered a loner and have one's own merit that is independent of the society's opinion. Plus the flower usually carries a very clear and cool scent, fitting into this kind of value system perfectly.

Empress in Palace, Shen Meizhuang says she likes chrysanthemum for its characters, capturing the emperor's heart.

Empress in Palace, Shen Meizhuang says she likes chrysanthemum for its characters, capturing the emperor's heart.

These four plants are heavily used in all aspects of Chinese culture. Understanding the reasons why can help you get some insight into the traditional values of the Chinese society. Of course the love for these plants is deeply rooted in the Confucius value and morality system, which dominated China's philosophy and social practices for centuries. These days, even though everyone understands what these four plants represent, they are no longer so heavily referenced or used in paintings, poetry and other cultural "products", as the Confucius morality is gradually fading into the past, so is the fixation on these plants. People are free to love whatever flowers they love, and appreciate them for what they are – just flowers – without the need to give their preferences any moral justification.
